Arts, Briefly: Records Broken at Christies Auction
The monumental Thomas Moran landscape ?Green River of Wyoming,? above, estimated at $3.5 million to $5 million, sold on Wednesday for $17.73 million at a Christie?s sale of American art in New York. The price set a record for a 19th-century American painting, surpassing that of John Singer Sargent?s ?Robert Louis Stevenson and His Wife,? which fetched $8.8 million when it was sold at Sotheby?s in 2004 to the Las Vegas casino owner Stephen A. Wynn and his wife, Elaine. The buyer of the Moran was the Avery Galleries of Bryn Mawr, Pa. Another oil on canvas, Marsden Hartley?s ?Lighthouse,? created in Berlin in 1915 and recently brought to light after its discovery in a museum in eastern Germany, sold for $6.31 million to an anonymous telephone bidder. Christie?s said the painting, with a estimate of $5 million to $7 million, set an auction record for an American Modernist painting, surpassing the $6.16 million for Georgia O?Keeffe?s ?Calla Lilies With Red Anemone,? sold at Christie?s in 2001.

Arts, Briefly: Spike Lee Plays Critic
Spike Lee is at the Cannes Film Festival to promote a new film, but he couldn?t resist taking a few swipes at his fellow directors Joel and Ethan Coen and Clint Eastwood. Speaking about his World War II drama, ?Miracle at St. Anna,? Mr. Lee said that, unlike the Coens, he was respectful in the way he portrayed death.?I always treat life and death with respect, but most people don?t,? he said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ?Look, I love the Coen brothers; we all studied at N.Y.U. But they treat life like a joke. Ha ha ha. A joke. It?s like: ?Look how they killed that guy! Look how blood squirts out the side of his head!? I see things different than that.?Speaking about the casting for his tale of four black American soldiers in Tuscany, Mr. Lee said that black actors appeared in war films too infrequently.?Clint Eastwood made two films about Iwo Jima that ran for more than four hours total, and there was not one Negro actor on the screen,? he said, adding, ?There?s no way I know why he did that ? that was his vision, not mine.? Mr. Lee also said that he was starting work on a documentary about Michael Jordan.

Arts, Briefly: Return of the Scream
Bearing scars from a brazen theft, the Edvard Munch Expressionist masterwork ?The Scream? went back on view on Wednesday in Oslo at the Munch Museum, where it was stolen in 2004, Agence France-Presse reported. ?The Scream? and ?Madonna,? another Munch painting seized at the same time, were presented to the news media and will go on public display from Friday through Sept. 26 under the title ?Scream and Madonna ? Revisited.? Then ?Madonna? will undergo further restoration. The museum said its ?Scream,? long thought to have been painted in 1893, as was another version, probably dates from 1910, although some doubts remain. Both paintings were scratched and torn and showed signs of humidity damage when they were recovered by the police in August 2006 under mysterious circumstances.
